Leviathan was written during the English Civil war; much of the book is occupied with demonstrating the necessity of a strong central authority to avoid the evil of discord and civil war. Any abuses of power by this authority are to be accepted as the price of peace. In particular, the doctrine of separation of powers is rejected: the sovereign must control civil, military, judicial and ecclesiastical powers. One of the original 'Age of Enlightenment' tomes (1651) on political philosophy in which Thomas Hobbes attempted to build a case for strong central government based around 'social contracts'. It's also the source of that maxim beloved by old Sunday morning media pundits which, in short, purports that without absolute central authority the life of the average man becomes 'solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short' (part I, chap. 13)
